Last weekend ROP Automotive Technology seniors John Diaz and Isaac Balbuena represented Baldwin Park High School at the SkillsUSA region 3 skills competition held at LA Trade Tech. Our team competed against approximately 35 other students from LA and Ventura counties. The competition consisted of a written test as well as various stations where students had to diagnose steering problems, use a diagnostic scan tool and build, measure & diagnose a complete electrical circuit. The duo earned a sixth place overall finish. This was their first time competing at this event and one of the most competitive held at the competition. Clayton West, their instructor, is beyond proud of these guys for an amazing job!

Last week the Baldwin Park/ESGVROP Automotive Technology SkillsUSA students participated in the annual Baldwin Park High School Elective Fair. Students set up and managed not one but two booths to showcase the Auto Shop and the BP Racing Team (auto club). The first booth was inside promoting the automotive pathway class with props and videos and the second booth was outside so the students could show off their recently completed project car. The fair was set up to showcase elective options to 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grades. Both booths were busy all day and the crowd around the car was immense when they had to fire it up and leave.

The Automotive Technology students at Baldwin Park High School recently completed the class project 1970 Chevrolet Nova. The project was a collaboration between all classes and students performed all the work on the vehicle except applying the paint. Students built the engine, trans, rear end, completed the interior and installed the glass! The paint was applied by Maaco in Orange. The general manager of Maaco was so impressed with the level of work by the students that we are currently working on an internship with 30 locations across Southern California. The instructor is Clayton West.

Advanced students enrolled in the Early Childhood Education class at Walnut High School are currently working on creating math activities to share with their Vejar Tk buddies. Once apprehensive students, they are now gaining confidence on how to work with 5 year olds in a school setting. Several students have decided to pursue careers with children because of the Vejar experience. Mrs. Sandoval is proud to be their teacher. Each and every one of her has contributed to fostering a positive experience for all the children they have encountered. They are planning a circle time especially for the Vejar Transition Kinders. They will be making an instrument with them that will be included in their Music and Movement activity. Mrs. Sandoval is excited to extend the welcome mat at Walnut High School to Vejar.
