UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP BUILDS HOMES IN AZUSA

GENERAL INFORMATION
The project is the sixth house built by students.
Students:  90% are high school students. During the day about 50 to 60 students work on the project.
Class:  "Introduction to Construction Trades."
It operates in three two hour blocks (A,B & C Sections). The unique thing about this house is that it is being built as an energy efficient house utilizing a variety of energy saving techniques.
Partnership: ESGVROP, the City of Azusa & the Azusa Unified School District.
Broke Ground: October 26, 2001
Expected completion date: June 1, 2002

Ray Brezina is discussing the pressurized water system and how it is installed. Students do all of the work on the system with remarkably good results. Only occasionally are the connections in need of redoing.

This movie shows the students lifting the wall into place. Instructors are helping direct the action making sure it is done safe and correct.

In this clip a concrete professional is showing one of the students the proper way of moving a pump hose. If moved incorrectly the hose would kink and cause the operator to be thrown.

Figure No. 1
Here, Chuck Curran is showing a student the process of installing composition roofing on the garage. This roof is rated for 40 years and the students find the work fun. Issues like overlapping for weather protection and nail spacing are being discussed.

Figure No. 2
Students are practicing what they learned by installing the roofing material as a team. Students are having to install the field sheets and make cuts at the ends. This requires some thought about layout and material use. Periodically, the students check their layout to make sure the rows line up with the ridge.

Figure No. 3
Adult student Jose Cen cuts a roof rafter prior to installation. Jose was the winner of the prestigious "Links for Success" scholarship from Miller Brewing Company to attend Los Angeles Trade Tech for two years. Jose is majoring in Carpentry. The lessons he has learned here at ESGVROP gives him a real good start on his college education.
